Our sixth year of running the hotel here in Spain and still we are not tired of it. It was busier than ever with lots of nice guests. New faces and “old acquaintances” who wanted to come over a few days or a week “Posada” again. We have enjoyed it all. For others it’s hard to imagine: the long hot days at the hotel are tiring but we still don´t experience it as work. It is all too much fun. The prospect that we will go to the next year with the same team feels good.
Veerle and Richard
In the early spring, Richard and Veerle “landed” in Ojén. Soon they had found their way and were able to “manage” the hotel and everything around it. Also thanks to the weekly Spanish-language lessons from Carmen.
An initial evaluation shows that they do not even think about going back to the Netherlands. Veerle and Richard will stay until December 2018 for sure and then go and see what´s next.
No year without something being tackled. In January there were seven bathrooms in the hotel ready for an upgrade. Working with micro-cemento has given wonderful results.
After four attempts we found out that the micro-cemento mentioned is not a good combination with the pool water. We gave up and this year opted for a version in tiles. Our fear that it would be old-fashioned turned out to be needless.
From mid-December our contractor will get back to work. The wall between the lobby, including the fireplace, will be removed and replaced with a glass curtain; this provides more seating in the winter and more tables in the summer on the popular patio for breakfast.
An additional advantage is that from February onwards we also have a so-called presentation room, a frequently occurring demand for (business) groups that want to exchange ideas with each other for a few days in a different environment.
From February this year, Ojén is connected to a fiber-optic network with regard to the internet. We have joined as quickly as possible. After we had exchanged all the amplifiers in the hotel and had struggled through a period of start-up problems, we now have a reasonably constant and much more powerful internet connection. Very important; the first question from children checking in with their parents is not “Where is the pool?” but “What is the Wi-Fi code?”.
Casa’s and Finca
Our two village houses have been busy during the past year. A week in a private house, between your temporary Spanish neighbours; the hotel around the corner for questions and tips or for a swim in the pool.
The larger families or groups of friends can visit our Finca. We will exchange the bunk bed in one of the rooms for a normal double bed so that 8 adults can find a place to sleep. Normally most bookings for the summer season take place in December and January. So, don`t wait too long.
We have had some time to discover more of Andalucia.
At an hour drive from Ojén, “Salta Ríos” offers rafting tours through the Rio Genil. We went there to have look in August and couldn´t imagine that there would be enough water in the dry landscape for a raft trip. But, both in the early morning and in the afternoon, enough water flows through Rio Genil to make a fairly impressive trip. From 4 people it is possible to man your own boat, otherwise you can join another group. Even midsummer there is enough water to, in our case, see mama going overboard.
Horse riding in Andalusia
This year we got to know “Riding fun in the sun” An English company. Horse riding for all ages (from 4 years) and levels, so also for people without experience. A unique opportunity to explore beautiful Andalusia on the back of a horse. Enjoy the beautiful views over the mountains of Casares, Manilva and Gaucin.
El Caminito del Rey
Is one of the most famous hiking trails in the world, located against the walls of the Giatanes Gorge, between the towns of Alorá and Ardales. A great experience with beautiful views and on a path against the mountain at more than 100 meters altitude. Because of the popularity and the limited number of visitors allowed, we advise you to purchase tickets in advance. This can be done on their website.
Around this time, our boys have lived longer in Spain than they have lived in the Netherlands. They are happy at the English international school. Enthusiastically engaged in tennis and golf. Jochem in particular, has received wings in the latter and hits impressive balls. Siebe started this year in the Secondary school.
Amazing that the subject “Drama”, where he, given his slight shyness, the most opposed, be labeled as the most favorite.
According to Jochem it´s tough in year 10. In order to keep his usually high numbers, he has to work hard, but so far with success.
Last May our family was temporarily expanded with a third “child”. Date is staying in Ojén for a year. Date can almost be seen as our eldest son, we know him already from the time he was a baby. Since he was 14, he has been here every summer to help in the hotel. After he finished high school this year, he was looking for the right interpretation of the rest of his education. In Ojén he has plenty of time for that. Meanwhile he has also got his Spanish driving- license.
